Definitions
of Telework
Telework
is an umbrella term for working arrangements that substitute technology for the
time and expense of travel. Some of
these alternatives are
telework,
mobile or virtual office,
hoteling,
satellite office, and telework center.
Telework/Telecommuting -
Telework is a management option that allows an employee to work
from home or a State office close to home. For some agencies the
teleworker’s home becomes the duty post on a
part time or full time basis.
Teleworkers
may be field workers who begin and end the day at home. All
teleworkers eliminate the traditional commute on
telework days
whether or not they are in travel status during the workday.
Telework
often gets the employee closer to his/her customers on telework days.
Mobile
or Virtual Office -
In
this option, staff are offered the option of exchanging their main office
space for the technology required to work independent of the main office. Employees typically receive a computer
and connectivity to access work files and databases
remotely.
Hoteling -
An office operation where space is designed for use
on a shared, as-needed basis. The workforce literally checks in and out of this
office, using and then leaving behind its standard business tools and
technologies. This alternative may
be used in connection with telework and mobile/virtual office. Office space is configured to employee by re-routing telephone and
e-mail. Hoteling offices are
typically planned to meet the needs of potential workers at the rate of 4-10
employees to a desk. Within the hoteling office there may be many different office
space designs to meet various needs: a conference room, single cubes and
adjoining cubes in various configurations. The cubes have a phone and a PC or a
docking station. File drawers are
available in common areas.
Satellite
Office
-
These are
typically operated by and for a single agency. Many organizations are finding it
makes sense to open satellite offices to reduce commute times for employees and
customers which also helps alleviate city traffic and parking congestion
problems. Satellite centers may or
may not include hoteling.
Telework
Center -
These
centers are similar to a satellite office, are often operated independently (as
a business) and are used by numerous organizations. A telework center may also be located as a small part of a satellite
office. Telework centers usually
have large hoteling functions. |
